I absolutely hate the idea that likes or followers can be bought for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
I think it's very obvious when someone has bought likes or followers on these social networks, at least it is on Instagram. -
The point of doing it is to give the appearance of something being popular when it isn't? I think most people will see through that.

I doubt it. At times some reputed pages has only a few likes. The manage it buying likes. Morever there is no user name involved, only no. of likes. -

Are there real people behind those likes at all? Or Fb admins just put a desired number of likes on your page so you would look "respectable"?

I have bought them sold them, outsource them and everything in between. A couple of years ago, I gained huge profits by selling facebook likes to kids that wanted to be popular and to small companies that wanted to look popular or even to politicians that wanted to gain social proof for their campaigns.
Is not a bad idea if you ask me, be you already need to have a facebook strategy, to have a solid product with a solid website. Buying facebook likes its like buying social proof, but you need to be already established on the market. -
1. FB is taking action on fake likes. They are too easy to caught.
2. You're not sure when your 1000+ likes will suddenly go away. It can also happen after few hours of delivery.
3. Gives impression of better page than few likes. And no most % of people don't see and will not see difference between fake or real. So this strategy works.
4. However they don't give you anything else.

Can't agree more. The interaction in your FB page is so much more rewarding when there are real people behind all those "likes".
